Individuals, Employers and Community Groups can now sponsor a student for classes.
The Homecare Workers
Training Center helps to
stabilize the caregiving
industry to meet the rapidly
growing public need for
personal assistance.
Through our pioneering efforts
to develop a free healthcare
career ladder for underprivileged
communities, we are improving
the lives of California’s
low-wage caregivers, seniors
and persons with disabilities.
There are over 190,000 homecare workers providing essential home and health care services to low-income elderly, disabled, and terminally ill patients in California. Homecare workers enable their patients to maintain a sense of dignity and independence. Unfortunately, their salaries are too low to confer the same dignity and independence upon them. The (HWTC) provides the first step in real world career advancement - education.
The (HWTC) offers year-round In Home Supportive Services (IHSS) courses as well as Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) and Licensed Vocational Nurse certification courses. The curriculum includes In-Home Supportive Services, Vocational Nurse, Computer Classes, Basic Skills Classes, such as Vocational English as a Second Language, literacy and basic math, basic computer skills, citizenship classes, advanced safety courses, nutrition, caring for terminally ill patients and patients with Alzheimer's, CPR and more.
Families rely on nursing home
and homecare workers to take
care of their loved ones. Yet,
most long term care workers in
America receive poverty-level
wages and little training or health
coverage — conditions that force
nearly 100 percent turnover.
And nine out of ten nursing homes
in America don't have enough
staff to provide adequate care to
residents, according to a new study
by the federal Department of
Health and Human Services.
Partnering to Fill
California’s Quality
Care Needs
We partner with nursing home
employers to identify job placement
opportunities for CNA and
LVN graduates to help maintain
adequate staffing levels at facilities
throughout California.
Uniting for Quality Care
In partnership with SEIU United
Long-Term Care Workers' Union
(ULTCW), our students are uniting
with patients and their families,
advocates, community leaders,
and elected officials in quality
care campaigns to win better care
standards for America's seniors and
persons with disabilities:
- Comprehensive training for
nursing home workers.
- Good caregiver careers, with
benefits and wages that help attract
and keep qualified providers.
We work in coalition with
community groups to improve
recruitment and retention of long
term care workers.

Case Management
The Training Center’s project coordinators
help participants overcome individual
barriers, provide on-going motivation and
support, and are knowledgeable about
outside agencies that can provide additional
supportive services when necessary.
Beyond the medical skills and the
tools for professional advancement,
program participants gain a real sense
of confidence and accomplishment
through their participation in the
program. For many of our students,
the certificate of completion is their
first diploma. For them, completing
the training builds self confidence,
job skills and interest in continuing
education.
The Training Center offers job
readiness skills-building workshops,
including:
- Resume writing
- Interviewing skills
- Effective communication
Computers are available, and our
staff provides individual assistance
to students. The Training Center
works with various agencies to place
program graduates in jobs. |
